We would like your feedback!
Cumberland City Council is seeking feedback on the proposed Toongabbie Bridge Upgrade Detailed Design. The project plans will be exhibited for a period of 28 days, and we would like you to 'Have your Say'.
In 2019, the NSW Government commenced a study to identify improvements to ease congestion at and near the Toongabbie Bridge. This study identified measures to address traffic congestion, improve road safety, and enhance active transport. The study showed that congestion primarily stems from the intersections on both sides of the bridge. It recommended against upgrading the bridge across the railway, as this would have minimal benefits to congestion and safety and come with significant costs.
What we want to achieve
Cumberland City Council have now completed detailed design for the localised widening to allow an additional southbound lane in Wentworth Avenue at Cornelia Road. To facilitate this widening, Junia Ave Service Road West is required to be closed its Intersection with Cornelia Road. Ancillary project upgrades include works to the Junia Ave Service Road carpark, public domain upgrades, a proposed additional crossing leg on the southern side of the The Portico and Portico Parade intersection. The design component of the project is on track for completion by mid-2026. The next steps following design would then be procurement and construction, with opportunities being explored to commence initial works during the 2026/27 financial year. This initiative aligns with Council’s commitment to improving local infrastructure, reducing congestion, and ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all road users.
What we are doing
In mid-2024, City of Parramatta Council and Cumberland City Council each received $1 million in funding from Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to progress the detailed design and approvals of the infrastructure upgrades recommended by the study, as detailed below:
