July 2021 competition:

Cumberland City Council invites creative writers and enthusiastic photographers to submit a photograph, short story, essay, or poem.

If you live or study in the Cumberland LGA this is an opportunity for you to show case your creative skills in a competitive environment, your work will be seen and published.  


Theme: 'Locally Led'

Local Government Week is designed to showcase the work councils do in their local communities, including the wide variety of services they provide. Cumberland City Council each year engages the community to participate in a variety of activities to celebrated local government week.  This year Cumberland City is running a Creative Writing and Photography Competition the theme is ‘Locally Led’.

What is ‘Locally Led?’

Locally led is an inside-out, bottom-up approach that involves mobilising local capacities, knowledge, and resources. It is an approach that aims to amplify local ownership.

Cumberland City is the epicentre of modern multicultural Australia led by a proud community that call Cumberland home, this is an opportunity for you to share what you think this means for our City!

The winning submissions will be published on councils social media, Council publications. Council  will also exhibit winning photographs and creative writing submissions in our libraires  during the month of September.

Send us your creative writing piece reflecting the 2021 ‘Locally Led’ theme for your chance to share in a prize pool of over $1000.


Who can enter?

Anyone who lives or Studies in the Cumberland Local Government Area. There are three different categories:

  • Primary School Students Aged 5 to 12years
  • Secondary School Student Aged 12 to 18 years
  • Adult (18+ years)

There is a separate prize pool for each category:

First prize: $200 Eftpos Voucher

Second prize: $100 Eftpos Voucher

Third prize: $50 Eftpos Voucher

Secondary School Student Aged 12 to 18 years

First prize: $200

Third prize: $50 Eftpos Voucher

Adult (18+ years)

First prize: $200 Eftpos Voucher

Second prize: $100 Eftpos Voucher

How to enter:

Entry is a three step process:

  1. Read the entry conditions before submitting.
  2. Complete the online entry form HERE
  3. Upload your submission

Please Note: Entrants may have their entry published by council.

Guidelines for entry:

  • Entry is open to anyone who lives or studies in the Cumberland Local Government Area.
  • The submission must be about the Cumberland City Local Government Area
  • Entrants may submit a maximum of one creative writing and one photograph to be judged by the panel
  • Submissions must be original and written by the entrant.
  • Submissions must be submitted via the online entry form on Council’s website

Submission information

Requirements for Creative Writing, Poems and Short Stories:

Primary School Aged

  • Essays & Short Stories between 300 and 500 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 100 lines.
  • PDF Format

Secondary School Aged

  • Essays and Short Stories between 500 and 900 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 200 lines.
  • PDF format

Adults 18 years and Over 

  • Essays and Short Stories between 900 and 1300 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 200 lines.
  • PDF format

Requirements for Photography submissions:

  • Artists are required to upload a digital image of their artwork in JPEG format
  • If your artwork contains people who can be identified, you will need to submit a photography and video consent form (available on Council’s website) for each person. If the person is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian is required to sign the photography and video consent form on their behalf.

Judging

  • Judging will be conducted between 23 August to 26 August 2021 inclusive
  • The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Winners

  • The judging panel will select the winners at the conclusion of the competition period
  • The winners will be announced on 30 August
  • Winners will be contacted via phone and/or email and will be announced on Council’s website and social media accounts
  • Winners and a selection of finalists will have their submissions exhibited display in Council’s libraries and the various Council pop-up stalls in the month of September.
