Cumberland Heritage Centre Proposal

Consultation has concluded

Council is investigating the feasibility of a new Cumberland Heritage Centre. This is proposed to be located in the existing Granville Library at 8 Carlton Street, Granville following the relocation of the Library to the new Granville Multipurpose Centre in 2020.

On 20 February 2019, Council passed the following motion:

Notice of Motion - Granville Heritage Precinct

Motion (Garrard/Hamed)

That Council:

1. Seek a report on the establishment of a 'Granville Heritage Precinct' within the environs of the existing Granville Neighbourhoods, so as to acknowledge the preservation and interpretation of the heritage representing the 19th and 20th century.

2. Further, that when considering any future use of the Granville Library, consideration be given to the establishment of a 'Heritage Centre' as an Annexure to the existing library system, acknowledging the extensive catalogue of data presently in the possession of the Granville Historical Society and others enabling a future benefit to the cultural tourism and family history study as desired by Cumberland residents.

The Motion moved by Councillor Garrard seconded by Councillor Hamed on being Put was declared CARRIED unanimously.

The proposed Heritage Centre would bring together local heritage and historical collections from across Cumberland and make them accessible to the wider community, including access via digitisation and technology.

The facility would also provide a base for Cumberland’s historical groups to work in partnership with Council to preserve the history of the Cumberland area as well as much needed meeting and activity spaces.
