Central Gardens, Merrylands is one of Cumberland’s most popular parks and is the ideal local outdoor venue for family parties, group activities and school excursions. It is located at the corner of the Cumberland Highway and Merrylands Road, Merrylands.

This bushland setting has two children’s playgrounds, animal enclosures, educational bush trails, ponds and water features, amphitheatre, tennis courts, open grass areas as well as BBQ and picnic areas and parking.

As part of the NSW Government Stronger Communities Fund, we are preparing to upgrade the larger playground in Central Gardens to be an inclusive play space for all.

The park’s revised design was informed by an online survey, where participants highlighted shade as being a very important feature and playground bark mulch as a concern. Both have been considered in the new and improved park design.

Mayor Greg Cummings said it was exciting to allow the community to help co-design their park and was important to create a space that allowed children to do what they do best – play and use their imaginations.

“As our lifestyle becomes increasingly sedentary, it is important to encourage children to play and develop both physical and social skills,” Mayor Cummings said.

“We are proud that Central Gardens will become a place where all children can come together, learn from each other and create a positive community and a space for everyone to enjoy.

“I encourage everyone to get down to the park to have a look at the latest designs and help Council select the equipment they would like to see at the park.”
